In society, the hair has extraordinary symbolic importance and, like the skin, has been singled out for special care, e.g., conditioning, dying, permanents, styling, and many other treatment processes. The process of washing and conditioning remains the most common mode of hair care for both men and women. Technology in this area has not progressed much in the last 50 years. Shampoos and Conditioning systems have promised to 1) gently cleanse 2) condition and 3) repair and restructure the hair, but the reality falls way short of these promises. Optima Hair Science was designed to address the flaws in conventional hair care technologies and to finally deliver on the promises made.
I. GENTLE CLEANSING
Promise: Cleanse the hair efficiently but gently. Removes dirt and sebum that has built up on the surface without damaging the keratin plates on the hair shaft.
Reality: In order to clean cheaply and efficiently, shampoos often contain very harsh cleansing agents that can strip keratin plates off of the hair shaft, damaging the cuticle.
II. CONDITIONING
Promise: Condition the hair and make it more manageable by smoothing out the external cuticle of each hair shaft.
Reality: Shampoos and conditioners are only in contact with the hair for minutes and then rinsed off. Most touted active ingredients, i.e., botanical extracts and oils, plant proteins, vitamins etc., are washed down the drain along with the dirt and sebum that we wanted to get rid of through the cleansing process. Quaternary ammonium compounds are added to shampoos and conditioners to stick to the hair and give the "slip" and "wet-comb ability" we usually attributed to the botanicals, vitamins, proteins, etc. that were washed down the drain. These quaternary ammonium compounds do little to repair or protect the hair; they just make it temporarily feel good. These same quaternary ammonium compounds that are found in common shampoos also are used in fabric softeners.
III. REPAIR
Promise: Treat the hair by repairing the damage caused by environmental forces acting on the hair during normal daily activities. Products promise to replenish the hair with components, i.e., fatty acids, ceramides, etc. that have been lost by damage from normal daily activities.
Reality: These protecting and repairing ingredients have little chemical affinity for the
hair and are rinsed or washed down the drain. Very little remains on the hair shaft. We call these "stupid conditioning agents." Just because a shampoo has ingredients that the hair needs for repair, does not mean they are delivered to the hair.

Cleansing System
Optima cleansing system is designed to be very mild, and to gently cleanse the hair without damaging the cuticle. One of the main cleansing agents is decyl glycoside, a mild, gentle, and natural cleanser derived from corn. It is generally not used because of its cost. The foaming action of Optima's shampoos is soft and lacy with compact bubbles, characteristic of mild, high-end cleansing formulations.
Optima Hair Science Technology: Optima Spheres or "Smart Conditioners"
Optima Spheres are produced in a patented process, which allows a specialized reparative, protective, and restructuring complex of ingredients to be encapsulated inside a tiny vesicle with a diameter of about 1 micron. The vesicle is multi-lamellar or multi-layered, similar to the layered structure of an onion (see Figure 8). The basic unit, which is repeated about 100 times inside each vesicle, consists of a lipid bilayer based on gentle
surfactants containing a cationic polymer. Inside the bilayer exists the reparative complex of ingredients.
The multiple layers of the onion-like vesicle protect the reparative complex from inactivation by the shampoo formula. Since the keratin of hair is negatively charged and the cationic polymer is positively charged the tiny vesicle is attracted to the hair and attaches to the hair shaft with great affinity. This is because opposite charges attract. The vesicles remain attached to the hair shaft through the rinsing, conditioning, and drying processes.
Proof of this action was demonstrated by the following study:
Strands of hair were washed, rinsed, and dried with a shampoo containing an Optima Sphere prototype. When examined with a scanning electron microscope, the Optima Sphere prototype was detected on the hair both before and after rinsing and drying.
Because of the attachment mechanism, the Optima Spheres bind to the more damaged parts of the hair shaft, precisely where they are needed. Fractures or lifting in the keratin plates, due to damage, create more surface area for the vesicles to bind so they are naturally more attracted to these damaged areas. This is why we call them "Smart Conditioners." Several hours after rinsing, the vesicles that are attached to the hair shaft break open under
normal mechanical forces and release the reparative complex onto the hair. Performing a type of "time release" restructuring effect. Again, they are truly "Smart Conditioners."
Reparative Complex
The reparative complex is protected from inactivation by the cleansing portion of the formula because they are protected within the bilayers of the multi-layered vesicle, or Optima Sphere. The ability to protect ingredients inside a multi-lamellar vesicle allows us to add ingredients that normally would not be stable in a shampoo formula, or would be washed away by the cleansing ingredients.
The reparative complex consists of the following key ingredients:
Fatty acids: Palmitic acid, Stearic acid, and Myristic acid. By virtue of their lipophilic nature they nourish, repair, and protect the hair shaft.
Avocado oil: Rich in unsaponifiable material and known for its protective, softening qualities. Helps strengthen the hair's natural protective barrier.
Wheat oil: With titrated plant derived ceramides, essential for restructuring and reparative activity.
